palindrome

A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that has the property of reading the same in either direction (the adjustment of punctuation and spaces between words is generally permitted). Composing literature in palindromes is an example of constrained writing. The word "palindrome" was coined from Greek roots palin (; "back") and dromos (; "way, direction") by English writer Ben Jonson in the 1600s. The actual Greek phrase to describe the phenomenon is karkinikê epigrafê (; crab inscription), or simply karkiniêoi (; crabs), alluding to the backward movement of crabs, like an inscription which can be read backwards.

Ein Palindrom (von griechisch Παλίνδρομος (palíndromos) „rückwärts laufend“) ist eine Zeichenkette, die von vorn und von hinten gelesen gleich bleibt (wie zum Beispiel das Wort ANNA). Palindrome müssen nicht immer einen Sinn ergeben, die Zeichenkette muss allerdings von vorne nach hinten und von hinten nach vorne von den verwendeten Zeichen und deren Reihenfolge genau gleich sein.

Palindrom (gr. palindromeo – biec z powrotem) – wyraz, liczba, zdanie a nawet wiersz, który ma to samo znaczenie niezależnie od tego, czy czytamy go normalnie, czy od tyłu (czyli wspak). Współcześnie palindromy pełnią funkcję zabawy słownej. Prawdopodobnie tak było również i w przeszłości, choć pewne znaleziska sugerują, że palindromy mogły też mieć znaczenie magiczne.

Il palindromo [dal greco πάλιν (indietro) e δρóμος (corsa) col significato "che corre all'indietro"] è una sequenza di caratteri che, letta a rovescio, rimane identica. Il concetto si riferisce principalmente a parole, frasi e numeri. Secondo una leggenda l'inventore e il primo virtuoso del genere sarebbe stato il poeta greco Sotade, vissuto ad Alessandria d'Egitto nel III secolo.
