Paleontology or Palaeontology is the study of prehistoric life. It includes the study of fossils to determine organisms' evolution and interactions with each other and their environments (their paleoecology). As a "historical science" it attempts to explain causes rather than conduct experiments to observe effects. Palaeontological observations have been documented as far back as the 5th century B.C.E. The science became established in the 18th century as a result of Georges Cuvier's work on  comparative anatomy, and developed rapidly in the 19th century. The term itself originates from Greek: παλαιός (palaios) meaning "old, ancient," ὄν, ὀντ- (on, ont-) meaning "being, creature" and λόγος (logos) meaning "speech, thought, study."

Die Paläontologie (gr.  palaiós „alt“, ontos „das Seiende“ und -logie) ist die Wissenschaft von den Lebewesen vergangener Erdzeitalter.

Paleontologi är vetenskapen om förhistoriskt liv, samt organismers evolution och interaktioner med varandra och deras miljö (deras paleoekologi). Som en "historisk vetenskap" försöker den förklara orsaker istället för att göra experiment för att studera effekterna. Den som arbetar med paleontologi kallas för paleontolog. Paleontolgi är en del av naturvetenskapen.

Paleontologia (od gr. palaios – stary + on – byt + logos – nauka) – nauka o organizmach kopalnych, wyprowadzająca na podstawie skamieniałości i śladów działalności życiowej organizmów wnioski ogólne o życiu w przeszłości geologicznej. Ściśle związana z naukami biologicznymi i geologią, posługuje się często fizyką i chemią.
