Pagus
In the later Western Roman Empire, following the reorganization of Diocletian, a pagus (compare French pays, Spanish pago, "a region, terroir") became the smallest administrative district of a province. By that time the word had long been in use with various meanings. Smith's Dictionary says of it, "The meaning of this word cannot be given in precise and absolute terms, partly because we can have no doubt that its significance varied greatly between the earliest and the later times of Roman history, partly because its application by Latin writers to similar, but not identical, communities outside Italy ..."

Pagus
Pagus (lat., "Flur, Gau"), in altrömischer Zeit Name der ländlichen Distrikte, in welche das römische Gebiet von Numa Pompilius oder nach anderen Quellen von Servius Tullius eingeteilt wurde. Sie bildeten seit letzterem Unterabteilungen der Tribus (Wahlbezirke) und hatten ihre eignen Vorsteher (magistri pagi), welche die Flurbücher führten, die Paganalien leiteten und bei Aushebungen und Tributverteilung Dienste zu leisten hatten.

Le mot latin pagus (au pluriel pagi), traduit par « pays », désigne une unité territoriale gallo-romaine inférieure à celle de la civitas, puis, à l'époque médiévale, une subdivision territoriale (proche du canton contemporain) souvent intégrée dans un comté.

Pagus
La parola latina pagus fa parte del lessico amministrativo romano: sta ad indicare una circoscrizione territoriale rurale (cioè al di fuori dei confini della città), di origine preromana e poi romana, accentrata su luoghi di culto locale pagano prima e cristiano poi.

All'interno del pagus si sono i vicus, ed in uno di essi risiede il Magister, appartenente al patriziato romano.

Sebbene sia noto qualche pagus, come quello Bagienno (dei liguri bagienni) di Bobbio (PC), quello Eboreo e Domizio di Mezzano Scotti (Bobbio) sotto il Municipio della citta romana di Velleia (PC), dedotti con i loro confini e i vicus più importanti dalle descrizioni della Tavola alimentaria di Velleia; e quello di Libarna, è difficile ricostruirne per molti i confini.

Gouw
Het woord gouw of pagus kan meerdere betekenissen hebben:
  • pagus (Romeins), naam voor een Romeins gebied, vaak vertaald als gouw (ongeveer tot 5e eeuw).
  • gouw (Germaans) (Romeins: pagus), naam voor een middeleeuws gebied onder de Franken (ongeveer 5e–10e eeuw).
    Veel Frankisch-Germaanse gouwen komen qua gebied overeen met de Romeinse pagi; het onderscheid is niet altijd precies te maken.
  • gouw (scouting), regio binnen Scouting in Vlaanderen.
  • rijksgouw (Reichsgau), bestuurlijk gebied in het Nazi-Duitse rijk.
  • De Gouw, landstreek in het werk van J.R.R. Tolkien.
  • de Nederlandse vertaling van het Engelse shire (gebiedsnaam).
    • Local Government Area in de Australische staten New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland en Western Australia.
