Une réaction d'oxydo-réduction est un processus de transfert d'électrons d'un atome à un autre. On appelle oxydant l'atome qui capte les électrons et réducteur l'atome qui les cède au cours de la réaction.

Die Oxidation (oder Oxydation) ist eine chemische Reaktion, bei der ein zu oxidierender Stoff (Elektronendonator) Elektronen abgibt. Ein anderer Stoff (Oxidationsmittel) nimmt die Elektronen auf (Elektronenakzeptor). Dieser wird durch die Elektronenaufnahme reduziert. Mit der Oxidation ist also immer auch eine Reduktion verbunden. Beide Reaktionen zusammen werden als Teilreaktionen einer Redoxreaktion betrachtet.

Eine Redoxreaktion (gesprochen: redóx)(eigentlich: Reduktions-Oxidations-Reaktion) ist eine chemische Reaktion, bei der ein Reaktionspartner Elektronen auf den anderen überträgt. Bei einer solchen Elektronenübertragungs-Reaktion finden also eine Elektronenabgabe (Oxidation) durch einen Stoff sowie eine Elektronenaufnahme statt. Eine Oxidation geschieht fast immer unter Abgabe von Licht- und /oder Wärmeenergie (exotherm). Wenn Oxidation und Reduktion zusätzlich räumlich getrennt voneinander ablaufen, so wird ein solches System Galvanisches Element genannt – der Elektronenfluss kann hier zur Energiegewinnung genutzt werden (Beispiel: Batterie, Akkumulator). Von außen erzwungene Redoxreaktionen werden Elektrolyse genannt.
