An oxide is a chemical compound containing at least one oxygen atom and other elements. Most of the earth's crust consists of oxides. Oxides result when elements are oxidized by air. Combustion of hydrocarbons affords the two principal oxides of carbon, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Even materials that are considered to be pure elements often contain a coating of oxides. For example, aluminium foil has a thin skin of Al₂O₃ that protects the foil from further corrosion.

Un oxyde est un composé de l'oxygène avec un élément moins électronégatif, c'est-à-dire tous sauf le fluor. Oxyde désigne également l'ion oxyde O2-.

Ein Oxid (v. grch. oxys scharf, spitz, sauer) ist eine Sauerstoff-Verbindung, in der dieser die Oxidationszahl -II hat. Das ihnen zugrunde liegende O2--Ion ist nur in Schmelzen und in Kombination mit Kationen (in Form von Salzen) existent, nicht jedoch als freies Ion. Es ist eine extrem starke Base und wird somit in wässriger Lösung quantitativ zum Hydroxid-Ion protoniert. Sauerstoff bildet mit fast allen Elementen isolierbare Oxide, mit Ausnahme von Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton und Fluor. Fluor nimmt hierbei eine Sonderstellung ein, weil zwar die Sauerstoffverbindungen OF2, O2F2 und O4F2 darstellbar sind, diese Stoffe aber wegen der höheren Elektronegativität des Fluors nicht als Fluoroxide, sondern als Sauerstofffluoride bezeichnet werden.

Un ossido è un composto chimico ottenuto dall'ossigeno e un metallo. Nel XVIII secolo gli ossidi erano chiamati calci, e solo successivamente si è passati a ossidi. Ad esempio la ruggine è un ossido di ferro (ossido ferrico) e la bauxite è un ossido di alluminio. Gli ossidi sono estremamente diffusi sulla superficie terrestre, ed anche nella materia solida dell'intero universo.
