oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen and a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or easily repair the resulting damage. All forms of life maintain a reducing environment within their cells. This reducing environment is preserved by enzymes that maintain the reduced state through a constant input of metabolic energy. Disturbances in this normal redox state can cause toxic effects through the production of peroxides and free radicals that damage all components of the cell, including proteins, lipids, and DNA.

Le stress oxydant (ou stress oxydatif) est un type d'agression des constituants de la cellules dû aux espèces réactives oxygénées (ROS, Reactive Oxygen Species en anglais) et aux espèces réactives oxygénées et azotées (RONS, N pour Nitrogen en anglais) oxydantes. Ces espèces sont, par définition, des radicaux libres. Par assimilation, le peroxyde d'hydrogène (H2O2) est considéré comme une ROS car, en présence de fer (sous forme ionique), il se dismute en deux radicaux hydroxyle (OH.) (réaction de Haber-Weiss).

Oxidativ stress kallas den biokemiska process där antingen reaktiva syreföreningar som organismen själv producerat skadar celler och organ, eller att ämnen som tas in i kroppen gör den skadan (t ex ämnen i cigarettrök). Oxidativ stress förekommer alltså naturligt i alla biologiska organismer som utnyttjar syrgas oavsett graden av komplexitet, som ett oönskat resultat av cellandningen. Oxidativ stress är alltså i de flesta situationer ingenting som är önskvärt.
