In production, research, retail, and accounting, a cost is the value of money that has been used up to produce something, and hence is not available for use anymore. In business, the cost may be one of acquisition, in which case the amount of money expended to acquire it is counted as cost. In this case, money is the input that is gone in order to acquire the thing. This acquisition cost may be the sum of the cost of production as incurred by the original producer, and further costs of transaction as incurred by the acquirer over and above the price paid to the producer. Usually, the price also includes a mark-up for profit over the cost of production.

COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology. It was founded in 1971.

Kosten sind die negativen Konsequenzen einer Aktion angesichts eines bestimmten Planes und Entscheidungsfeldes. Zur Vereinfachung werden im Allgemeinen nur monetäre Größen berücksichtigt.

  • in der Programmierung den konkreten Ressourcenbedarf eines Programms, siehe Leistung (Informatik) und Skalierbarkeit
  • in der Theoretischen Informatik den abstrakten Ressourcenbedarf eines Algorithmus, siehe Komplexität (Informatik). Abstrakter auch, welcher Aufwand minimal für die Lösung eines bestimmten Problems erforderlich ist, siehe Komplexitätsklasse und Landau-Symbole
  • in der Graphentheorie für die Güte eines Pfades
  • in der Physik wird das Wort Kosten manchmal im Zusammenhang mit dem Wirkungsgrad verwendet
• im Rechtssinne Gebühren und Auslagen, siehe Kosten (Recht)
• das geschmackliche Prüfen einer Speise, was bei einigen Genussmitteln zu eigenen Berufsbildern geführt hat (Teekoster u. a. m.), siehe Vorkoster

Kustannus on yritystoiminnassa tuotannontekijän rahassa mitattu käyttö tai kulutus. Se on kustannuslaskennassa käytettävä käsite, joka ei ole sama kuin kirjanpidon kulu-käsite. Kustannus eroaa kulusta seuraavin tavoin:

• Laajuusero: Kaikki kustannukset eivät ole kuluja (kuten keinotteluluonteiset sijoitustappiot) eivätkä kaikki kulut ole kustannuksia (esimerkiksi oman pääoman korko)
• Jaksotusero: Varovaisuuden periaatteen mukaisesti esimerkiksi tuotekehitykseen liittyvät menot kirjataan kuluiksi sinä vuonna kuin ne syntyvät, kun taas kustannuslaskennessa ne voidaan jaksottaa tuotteen koko elinkaarelle.
• Arvostusero: Kirjanpitolain mukaan kulut arvostetaan hankintahinnan mukaan, mutta kustannuslaskennassa käytetään vaihtoehtoiskustannuksia.
