Otolaryngology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, and head & neck disorders. The full name of the specialty is otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Practitioners are called otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons, or sometimes otorhinolaryngologists (ORL). A commonly used term for this speciality, although somewhat out of favor, is ENT (ear, nose and throat). The term comes from the Greek ωτολαρυγγολογία (oto = genitive for ear, laryngo = genitive for larynx/throat, logy = study) and it literally means the study of ear and neck. The full term ωτορινολαρυγγολογία (otorhinolaryngology), also includes rhino, which is the genitive of nose.

Otorynolaryngologia (chirurgia głowy i szyi) - dziedzina medycyny zajmująca się fizjologią, rozpoznawaniem i leczeniem chorób ucha (z gr. oros, otos), nosa (z gr. rhinos, rynos), krtani (z gr. laryngos), gardła (z gr. pharyngos) oraz innych narządów głowy i szyi. W obręb jej zainteresowań wchodzi także chirurgia gruczołów ślinowych, języka, zatok przynosowych, w tym także zabiegi endoskopowe zatok przynosowych: FESS, krtani: mikrolarynoskopia. Otolaryngolodzy zajmują się też chirurgią szczęki - np. resekcja kości szczękowej (maksylektomia), zabiegami endoskopowymi przełyku (ezofagoskopia), czy dolnych dróg oddechowych (tracheobronchoskopia) oraz chirurgia rekonstrukcyjną.

Otorinolaryngologie (ous (genitivus: otos): oor, rhis (genitivus: rhinos): neus, larugx (genitivus: laruggos): keel) is het medisch specialisme dat zich bezig houdt met voor onderzoek en behandeling van aandoeningen van keel, neus en oor, in Nederland KNO-heelkunde genoemd, in Vlaanderen NKO. Otorinolaryngologie houdt zich ook bezig met het overige hoofd-halsgebied zoals gezwellen in de hals, in de speekselklieren en afwijkingen van de slokdarm. Typische behandelingen op het gebied van de otorinolaryngologie zijn het zogeheten knippen van keel- en/of neusamandelen of het plaatsen van trommelvliesbuisjes. Er bestaat een nauwe samenwerking met logopedisten, kaakchirurgen en audiologen.
