An osteoclast (from the Greek words for "bone" and "broken") is a type of bone cell that removes bone tissue by removing the bone's mineralized matrix. This process is known as bone resorption. Osteoclasts and osteoblasts are instrumental in controlling the amount of bone tissue. Osteoblasts form bone; osteoclasts resorb bone. Osteoclasts are formed by the fusion of cells of the monocyte-macrophage cell line. Osteoclasts are characterized by high expression of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and cathepsin K.

Les ostéoclastes sont des cellules multinucléées possédant de quelques noyaux à une cinquantaine de noyaux (syncytium) d'origine hématopoïétique. Elles ont un diamètre de 50 à 100µm. Les cellules myéloïdes se différencient en promonocytes pour donner ensuite naissance aux : - cellules dendritiques - monocytes (puis macrophages par fusion des monocytes) - pré-ostéoclastes (puis ostéoclastes par fusion des pré-ostéoclastes)

Osteoklasten (Singular der Osteoklast) sind mehrkernige Zellen, die durch Fusion von mononukleären Vorläuferzellen aus dem Knochenmark entstehen. Sie gehören zum mononukleär-phagozytären System (MPS). Ihre Hauptaufgabe ist die Resorption der Knochensubstanz.Osteoklasten entwickeln sich aus hämatopoetischen Stammzellen des Knochenmarkes. Sie zeigen teilweise Eigenschaften von zirkulierenden Monozyten und Gewebs-Makrophagen.

Osteoklasty, komórki kościogubne, wielojądrzaste komórki mające zdolność rozpuszczania i resorpcji tkanki kostnej. Posiadają istotne znaczenie w warunkach prawidłowego kształtowania się kości, procesów zrostu po złamaniach oraz w chorobach kości np. osteoporozie. Są rodzajem makrofagów - powstają przez fuzję makrofagów jednojądrowych pobudzaną przez witaminę D.

Er vindt in het lichaam voortdurend ombouw plaats van bot. Cellen met de naam osteoclasten breken bot af, de osteoblasten bouwen bot op. De periode dat de osteoclasten het bot oplossen, word osteolyse genoemd. Bij de opbouw van het bot, hebben de Osteoblasten natuurlijk calcium nodig. Deze calcium word uit het bloed gehaalt, door het kanaal v. Havers. Bij osteoporose ligt het evenwicht te ver naar de osteoclasten. Onder meer in de jeugd hebben de osteoblasten de overhand.
