The suffix -ose is used in biochemistry to form the names of sugars. Numerous systems exist to name specific sugars more descriptively.Monosaccharides, the simplest sugars, may be named according to the number of carbon atoms in each molecule of the sugar:  pentose is a five-carbon monosaccharide, and hexose is a six-carbon monosaccharide.  Aldehyde monosaccharides may be called aldoses; ketone monosaccharides may be called ketoses.

Les oses (ou monosaccharides) sont les monomères des glucides. Ils ne sont pas hydrolysables. Tout comme les diholosides (ou disaccharides), ils possèdent un pouvoir sucrant, et sont solubles dans l'eau. Eine Öse ist ein aus Metall, Kunststoff oder Gummi bestehender Ring. Es handelt sich entweder dabei um eine kleine Draht- oder Metallschlinge an Kleidern, die mit Haken dem Zusammenhalt dienen oder sie werden in ein Loch eingesetzt und dienen der Verstärkung des Lochrandes oder um andere Gegenstände vor den scharfen Kanten des Lochs zu schützen.
