La Francophonie is an international organisation of French-speaking countries and governments, and also, in French, to the community of French-speaking people . Formally known as the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) or the International Organization of La Francophonie, the organisation comprises fifty-five member states and governments and thirteen observers. The prerequisite for admission is not the degree of French usage in the member countries, but a prevalent presence of French culture and French language in the member country's identity, usually stemming from France's interaction with other nations in its history. Few of the member states are majority French-speaking aside from France and its overseas possessions, and sub-national members. French functions in several other member states as a common language while having little current presence in the other members, being that the links are mainly historical and cultural.

Darin eingeschlossen sind Verhältnisse ganz unterschiedlicher Natur: Staaten, in denen Französisch offizielle Sprache ist, Staaten in denen Französisch Muttersprache ist und solche Staaten, in denen Französisch Lehrsprache ist. Bereits 1871 wurde der Begriff der "Frankophonie" von Geographen verwendet, "erfunden" wurde das Wort von Onésime Reclus (1837-1916).

Frankofonia (fr. La Francophonie, z łac. Francus = 'Francuz' + gr. phone = 'głos, dźwięk') - termin utworzony w 1880 roku przez francuskiego geografa Onésime Reclus (brata Élisée Reclus), oznaczający wspólnotę ludzi i państw posługujących się językiem francuskim. Obecnie jest to międzynarodowa organizacja skupiająca rządy krajów francuskojęzycznych. Tylko w kilku z tych krajów francuski spełnia rolę pierwszoplanową, w pozostałych odgrywa już pomniejszą rolę.

La francofonia dal punto di vista linguistico Da un punto di vista linguistico il termine "francofonia" designa l'insieme dei paesi che hanno la lingua francese come lingua materna e/o ufficiale, nonché quelli in cui tale lingua, pur non essendo riconosciuta come ufficiale dalla legge, svolge il ruolo di seconda lingua ufficiale "di fatto" essendo ampiamente utilizzata a livello politico-legislativo, nel sistema educativo, nei media e nella comunicazione commerciale (è il caso dei paesi del Maghreb). Il francese, parlato come lingua materna o come seconda lingua corrente da circa 200 milioni di persone ripartite su cinque continenti, è alla base di un insieme linguistico estremamente eterogeneo e variegato, l'unico che possa confrontarsi al mondo anglofono per universalità e diversificazione culturale.
