Sono pertanto esclusi l'anidride carbonica, l'acido carbonico e i suoi sali, ovvero i bicarbonati e i carbonati. Il monossido di carbonio, benché abbia un carbonio con numero di ossidazione inferiore a +4 e quindi sia incluso nella definizione, è comunque considerato un composto inorganico.

Een organische verbinding is een chemische verbinding waarvan een molecule minstens een koolstofatoom bevat. Uitzonderingen vormen de carbonaten, cyaniden, cyanaten en thiocyanaten, die hoewel ze een koolstofatoom bevatten, toch tot de anorganische verbindingen gerekend worden.Verder bevatten organische verbinding (bijna) altijd waterstofatomen en meestal zuurstofatomen. Ook zitten er vaak stikstofatomen in organische verbindingen.De naam "organische verbindingen" stamt uit de tijd dat deze groep verbindingen alleen in de levende natuur te vinden waren en door organismen gemaakt moesten worden. Sinds 1828 (Wöhler, synthese ureum) is bekend dat deze verbindingen ook in het laboratorium gemaakt kunnen worden. Correcter zou het zijn na 1828 te spreken van "koolstofchemie" maar de naam "organisch" is verbonden gebleven met deze groep verbindingen.
