In computing, sound reproduction, and  video, an optical disc is a flat, circular, usually polycarbonate disc where data is stored in the form of pits (or bumps) within a flat surface, usually along a single spiral groove that covers the entire recorded surface of the disc. This data is generally accessed when a special material on the disc (often aluminium) is illuminated with a laser diode. The pits distort the reflected laser light. Most optical discs, with the exception of a few such as black CD-ROMs designed for the original Sony PlayStation, have a characteristic prismatic or iridescent appearance created by the grooves in the reflective layer.

Unter optischen Speichern (auch oft optische Platten) versteht man auswechselbare Massenspeicher, die durch optische Abtastung (meist mittels Laser) gelesen und/oder beschrieben werden können. Die bekanntesten optischen Speichermedien heutzutage sind die CD/CD-ROM und deren Weiterentwicklung, die DVD. Daneben wurden jedoch noch diverse andere Medien und auch die Hybridvariante der Magneto-optischen Speicher entwickelt. Diese haben jedoch heute in der Praxis eine geringere Bedeutung. Nur einmal beschreibbare optische Speichermedien werden WORM (Write once, read many) genannt und in der Archivierung von digitalen Informationen eingesetzt.

Dysk optyczny to jeden z rodzajów nośników informacji używany w systemach komputerowych do zapisu danych. Dysk optyczny jest płaskim, plastikowym krążkiem pokrytym materiałem, na którym mogą być zapisywane bity informacji w postaci fragmentów dobrze i słabo odbijających wiązkę światła. Odczyt danych następuje poprzez oświetlenie promieniem lasera. Dane są zapisane sekwencyjnie na ciągłej, spiralnej ścieżce od środka dysku na zewnątrz.

Un disco ottico è un supporto di memorizzazione costituito da un disco piatto e sottile in genere di policarbonato trasparente. Al suo interno è inserito un sottile foglio mettalico, in genere di alluminio, su cui vengono registrate e lette le informazioni tramite un raggio laser.
