An opsonin is any molecule that targets an antigen for an immune response. However, the term is usually used in reference to molecules that act as a binding enhancer for the process of phagocytosis, especially antibodies, which coat the negatively-charged molecules on the membrane. Molecules that activate the complement system are also considered opsonins. Phagocytic cells do not have an FC receptor for IgM, making IgM ineffective in assisting phagocytosis. However, IgM is extremely efficient at activating complement and is, therefore, considered an opsonin. Opsonins can also refer to molecules that target a cell for destruction through the action of natural killer (NK) cells. Only opsonins that enhance phagocytic activity will be further described in this article.

Opsonine sind im Körper vorkommende Proteine, die einen Teil der Immunantwort darstellen. Opsonine können entweder Antikörper oder Komplementfaktoren sein, die die Verknüpfung von Phagozyten an Bakterienzellen oder andere Mikroorganismen erleichtern, indem sie als Brücke zwischen beiden Zellen fungieren. In diesem Zusammenhang spricht man auch von der Opsonisierung der Zielzelle. Phagozyten können bis zu einem bestimmten Ausmaß von sich aus direkt an Bakterien oder andere Zellen mit Antigencharakter binden. Die Bindung wird jedoch durch einen aktivierten Komplementfaktor – ein Plasmaprotein, das den humoralen Teil der unspezifischen Immunantwort darstellt – verstärkt, indem der Komplementfaktor als Brücke zwischen dem Bakterium und dem entsprechenden Komplementrezeptor des Phagozyten fungiert.

Le terme d'opsonine désigne, en immunologie, toute substance qui se lie à des antigènes et induit leur phagocytose par des macrophages ou des leucocytes neutrophiles. Les opsonines désignent donc les anticorps et certains fragments du complément qui se lient aux antigènes de surface d'une bactérie pendant l'activation du complément, et favorisent la liaison des récepteurs des macrophages à la surface cellulaire.

Opsoniny to substancje, które po przyłączeniu się do antygenu pozwalają na łatwiejsze zajście fagocytozy. Taka ułatwiona dzięki opsoninom fagocytoza nosi nazwę immunofagocytozy, zaś proces i stan opłaszczenia antygenu przez opsoniny nazywamy opsonizacją.
