opis

Opis (Akkadian Upî or Upija) was an ancient Babylonian city on the Tigris, not far from modern Baghdad. The precise location of Opis has not been established, but from the Akkadian and Greek texts, it was located on the east bank of the Tigris, near the Diyala River. Opis is mentioned for the first time at the beginning of second millennium BCE. In the 14th century BCE, it became the capital of an administrative region in Babylonia. The Babylonians dug the "royal canal" between the Euphrates and the Tigris, which ended near Opis. Nebuchadnezzar built a wall between the two rivers to protect his country from a Median invasion, which also ended near Opis.

Upija) war eine Stadt im antiken Babylonien am Ufer des Tigris unweit des heutigen Bagdad.Die genaue Lage von Opis ist nicht vollständig gesichert, aus den akkadischen und griechischen Quellen ergibt sich jedoch, dass es sich am östlichen Tigrisufer befunden haben muss. Als möglicher Kandidat gilt Tulûl al-Mugaili.Erstmals erwähnt wurde Opis zu Beginn des 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. Im 14. Jh. v. Chr. wurde es zu einem regionalen Verwaltungsmittelpunkt innerhalb des Babylonischen Reiches. Die strategische Bedeutung des Ortes wuchs durch den Bau des Königskanals zwischen Euphrat und Tigris, der bei Opis in den Tigris mündete, sowie durch den Bau einer Verteidigungsmauer zwischen beiden Flüssen durch König Nebukadnezar, die bei Opis auf den Tigris stieß. Zugleich lag Opis an einer Fernstraße, die Susa im Gebiet der Elamiter mit Assyrien (und Lydien) verband.
