Operant conditioning (or instrumental conditioning) is a form of learning in which an individual's behavior is modified by its consequences; the behavior may change in form, frequency, or strength. Operant conditioning is distinguished from classical conditioning (or respondent conditioning) in that operant conditioning deals with the modification of "voluntary behavior" or operant behavior. Operant behavior operates on the environment and is maintained by its consequences, while classical conditioning deals with the conditioning of reflexive (reflex) behaviors which are elicited by antecedent conditions. Behaviors conditioned via a classical conditioning procedure are not maintained by consequences.

Unter Konditionierung versteht man in der behavioristischen Lernpsychologie das Erlernen von Reiz-Reaktions-Mustern (Stimulus-Response). Grundlage dieser Lerntheorien ist die Annahme, innere Vorgänge wie Gefühle und Gedanken niemals wissenschaftlich untersuchen zu können, das sogenannte Black-Box-Modell. Man unterscheidet zwei Grundtypen der Konditionierung: die Klassische Konditionierung, die ausgelöstes Verhalten betrifft (der lernende Organismus hat keine Kontrolle über den Reiz oder seine Reaktion) und die Instrumentelle bzw. Operante Konditionierung, die ursprünglich spontanes Verhalten betrifft, das je nach wahrgenommener Konsequenz zielgerichtet wird.

Warunkowanie instrumentalne zwane pierwotnie przez jego odkrywców J. Konorskiego i S. Millera warunkowaniem II typu (w odróżnieniu od warunkowania I typu zwanego klasycznym lub pawłowowskim) a ostatnio (jako kalka z j. angielskiego) także warunkowaniem sprawczym. Wymaga od badanego organizmu wykonania określonej reakcji ruchowej lub powstrzymania się od niej (reakcje te zwane są reakcjami instrumentalnymi lub sprawczymi) w odpowiedzi na znak ustalony przez eksperymentatora (zwany bodźcem warunkowym). W efekcie zwierzę ma możliwość zaspokojenia swojej potrzeby (uzyskuje pokarm, wodę, itp.) lub unika bodźca nieprzyjemnego (np. dmuchnięcia w ucho). Chcąc uzyskać większą liczbę reakcji stosuje się wzmocnienie nieregularne, co kilka naciśnięć dźwigni. Zwierzę ma określoną pojemność żołądka, aby zaspokoić głód musi wtedy więcej razy nacisnąć dźwignię.
