Ontology (from , from the Greek , ὄντος "being; that which is", present participle of the verb "be", and , : science, study, theory) is the philosophical study of the nature of being, existence, or reality, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations. Traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics, ontology deals with questions concerning what entities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences.

Die Ontologie (aus dem Griechischen  on - „seiend“ als Partizip Präsens zu einai „sein“, und λόγος logos - „Lehre“, „Wort“) ist eine Disziplin der theoretischen Philosophie. In der Ontologie geht es in einer allgemeinen Begriffsverwendung um Grundstrukturen der Realität. Dieser Gegenstandsbereich ist weitgehend deckungsgleich mit dem, was nach traditioneller Terminologie „allgemeine Metaphysik“ genannt wird. Dabei wird etwa eine Systematik grundlegender Typen von Entitäten (Gegenstände, Eigenschaften, Prozesse) und ihrer strukturellen Beziehungen diskutiert. Spezielle Gegenstandsbereiche betreffende Fragen sind hingegen zum Beispiel „Was ist der Mensch?“, „Gibt es einen Gott?“ oder „Hat die Welt einen Anfang?“. Diese Themen fielen nach traditioneller Stoffgliederung in den Bereich „spezielle Metaphysik“.
