oncogene

An oncogene is a modified gene, or a set of nucleotides that codes for a protein and is believed to cause cancer. Genetic mutations resulting in the activation of oncogenes increase the chance that a normal cell will develop into a tumor cell. Since the 1970s, dozens of oncogenes have been identified in human cancer. Oncogenes are figuratively thought to be in a perpetual tug-of-war with tumor suppressor genes which act to prevent DNA damage and keep the cell's activities under control. There is much evidence to support the notion that loss of tumor suppressors or gain of oncogenes can lead to cancer.

Onkogene (wörtlich Krebs-Gene) sind Teile des normalen Erbgutes einer Zelle, die den Übergang vom normalen Wachstumsverhalten der Zelle zu ungebremstem Tumorwachstum fördern. Das „gen“ in Onkogen wird hier nicht, wie in den Worten karzinogen oder mutagen, im Sinne von „erzeugend“ oder „fördernd“ benutzt, sondern leitet sich direkt von dem Wort Gen als Teil des Erbgutes ab.

Onkogeny - dosłownie geny nowotworów. Powstają z protoonkogenów, normalnie biorących udział w regulacji podziałów komórkowych np. w transdukcji sygnałów np. jako czynniki transkrypcyjne. Mutacja zachodząca w protoonkogenie przekształca go w onkogen. Produkt onkogenu pozostaje stale w aktywnej formie, prowadząc do niekontrolowanej proliferacji. Komórka, w której dochodzi do niekontrolowanego wzrostu uległa transformacji nowotworowej. Proces przekształcenia protoonkogenu w onkogen nazywamy onkogenezą.

Un oncogene è un gene modificato, o una serie di nucleotidi che codificano per una proteina, che aumentano la malignità di una cellula tumorale. Solitamente gli oncogeni intervengono nello sviluppo tumorale e aumentano le possibilità che lo sviluppo (proliferazione e differenziamento) di una cellula si diriga in senso tumorale. Nuove ricerche indicano che piccoli RNA di 21-25 nucleotidi, detti miRNA, possono controllare tali geni attraverso la downregolazione.
