ombre
Latin umbra "shadow, "shade" via French ombrage. Akin to adumbrate "intimate, outline, suggest." Apparently, the sense of "shadow" led to "suspicion" which, in turn, led to "reaction to suspicion = offence." The origins of Latin "umbra" are dubious. The great etymologist Julius Pokorny believed it came from the same *uesperos that gave Latin vesper "evening," Russian vecher "evening," and English "west."sâya (plv., Hendi šhâyâ, Izad-bânu ye sâya !!)
