number

A number is an abstract idea used in counting and measuring. A symbol which represents a number is called a numeral, but in common usage the word number is used for both the idea and the symbol. In addition to their use in counting and measuring, numerals are often used for labels (telephone numbers), for ordering (serial numbers), and for codes (ISBNs). In mathematics, the definition of number has been extended over the years to include such numbers as zero, negative numbers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, and complex numbers.

Liczba – pojęcie abstrakcyjne, jeden z podstawowych obiektów matematycznych.Określenie „liczba” bez żadnego przymiotnika jest nieścisłe, gdyż matematycy nie definiują „liczb”, lecz „liczby naturalne”, „liczby całkowite”, itp. Poszczególne rodzaje liczb są definiowane za pomocą aksjomatów lub konstruowane z bardziej podstawowych pojęć, takich jak zbiór, czy typy liczb prostsze od konstruowanego. Konstrukcję można też przeprowadzać od drugiej strony, to znaczy zacząć od zdefiniowania np. liczb rzeczywistych za pomocą aksjomatów, a następnie określić prostsze typy liczb jako podzbiory z tymi samymi działaniami. Wszystkie te sposoby prowadzą do równoważnych (izomorficznych) tworów.
