A telenovela is a limited-run television serial melodrama of the type made famous in Latin America. The word is a portmanteau of tele, short for television, and novela ("novel/soap opera"). Telenovelas are essentially soap operas in miniseries format.Patricio Wills, head of development at Telemundo, describes telenovelas thus: "The plot is always the same. In the first three minutes of the first episode the viewer already knows the novela will end with that same couple kissing each other. A telenovela is all about a couple who wants to kiss and a scriptwriter who stands in their way for 150 episodes."

Die Telenovela (span. telenovela [], das heißt Fernsehroman - in Portugiesische Sprache "Novela", vereinzelt auch "Teleseria") ist eine spezielle Form der Fernsehserie, welche aus Lateinamerika stammt. Telenowela (hiszp. telenovela) – gatunek telewizyjny bliski serialowi telewizyjnemu, często mylony z operą mydlaną. Nazwa polska wywodzi się z hiszpańskiego telenovela. Z punktu widzenia literackiego jest ona niepoprawna, gdyż termin 'nowela' w języku polskim oznacza krótką formę literacką, natomiast w hiszpańskim słowo novela znaczy 'powieść'.

Telenovela is het Spaanse en Portugese woord voor soapserie. Telenovela's worden vooral in Latijns-Amerika, maar ook in de Verenigde Staten geproduceerd. De grootste producenten van Telenovela's zijn Mexico en Brazilië. Ze zijn immens populair in Latijns-Amerika, Spanje, Portugal en in de Spaanstalige gemeenschap in de Verenigde Staten. Echter ook daarbuiten begint de populariteit van telenovela's te stijgen. Zo zijn ze te zien in Rusland, diverse landen in Oost-Europa, Frankrijk, Maleisië, Singapore, China en op de Filipijnen.
