A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a legally constituted organization created by natural or legal persons that operates independently from any form of government. The term originated from the United Nations (UN), and is normally used to refer to organizations that are not a part of the government and are not conventional for-profit business. In the cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental status by excluding government representatives from membership in the organization. The term is usually applied only to organizations that pursue wider social aims that have political aspects, but are not openly political organizations such as political parties.

Eine Nichtregierungsorganisation (NRO respektive NGO zu englisch/BE: non-governmental organisation bzw. AE: organization), auch nichtstaatliche Organisation, ist eine Bezeichnung für einen zivilgesellschaftlich zustandegekommenen Interessenverband. Der Begriff wurde im Englischen von den Vereinten Nationen eingeführt, um die zivilgesellschaftlichen Vertreter, die sich an den politischen Prozessen der UNO beteiligen, von den staatlichen Vertretern abzugrenzen. Er wird von und für Vereinigungen benutzt, die sich sozial- und umweltpolitisch engagieren, unabhängig von einer Beziehung zur UN.

Une organisation non gouvernementale ou ONG est une organisation d'intérêt public qui ne relève ni de l'État ni d'une institution internationale. Les ONG n'ont pas le statut de sujet de droit international.

NGO (non-governmental organization) kan syfta på:

• Icke-statlig organisation, en organisation utan statliga band, som kan verka antingen ideellt eller kommersiellt
• Ideell organisation, en icke-statlig organisation som verkar ideellt
• Internationell organisation, en organisation som verkar över nationsgränser och som kan vara idell, kommersiell, icke-statlig eller statlig

Organizacja pozarządowa (ang. Non-Governmental Organization - stąd często stosowany także w polszczyźnie skrót NGO) to organizacja obywatelska (założona przez obywateli lub ich organizacje) i działająca z inicjatywy własnej na rzecz wybranego przez siebie wycinka interesu publicznego.
