Non-fiction
Non-fiction is an account or representation of a subject which is presented as
fact. This presentation may be accurate or not; that is, it can give either a true or a false account of the subject in question. However, it is generally assumed that the authors of such accounts believe them to be truthful at the time of their composition. Note that reporting the beliefs of others in a nonfiction format is not necessarily an endorsement of the ultimate veracity of those beliefs, it is simply saying that it is true that people believe that (for such topics as
mythology,
religion). Non-fiction can also be written about
fiction, giving information about these other works.

Sachbuch ist die deutschsprachige Bezeichnung für ein Buch, das ein bestimmtes Sachthema für ein
Laienpublikum darstellt. Sie heißen auf englisch „non-fiction“ und bilden so das Gegenstück zur
Belletristik bzw. „fiction“ (von lateinisch „fictum“, erfunden).Im Gegensatz dazu richtet sich ein
Fachbuch an die Spezialisten eines bestimmten wissenschaftlichen Faches.

Non-fictie
Met non-fictie (ook: non-fiction) worden informatieve teksten of beelden aangeduid, die hoofdzakelijk op de werkelijkheid betrekking hebben. Dit in tegenstelling tot
fictie, dat zich afspeelt in de fantasie van de maker van de teksten of beelden. Onder "werkelijkheid" wordt in dit verband verstaan wat de maker als werkelijkheid beschouwt. Zo worden religieuze werken als de Bijbel en de Koran in het algemeen als non-fictie beschouwd, ook al zullen lezers die niet het christendom respectievelijk de islam aanhangen, een deel van de in deze boeken beschreven gebeurtenissen als verzinsels beschouwen.
