Según el vigente calendario gregoriano el
siglo XIX comprende los años situados entre
1801 y
1900. No obstante, es frecuente la concepción de que el siglo XIX comenzó en 1800 y finalizó en el año 1899. De la trilogía de ensayos históricos de
Eric Hobsbawm (citados en la bibliografía) se desprende una definición más, de carácter histórico, en la que enmarca al período entre 1789, año de la revolución francesa, y 1914, año de la primera guerra mundial, como el "siglo XIX largo". La historiografía considera al siglo como el comienzo definitivo de la
Edad Contemporánea. El adjetivo para referirse a las cosas de este siglo o relacionadas con él es pero su uso es, habitualmente, en forma despectiva para referirse a lo caduco.
