The Nickelodeon (AE: nickel = 5¢-coin, Greek: Odeion = roofed over theatre) was an early 20th century form of small, neighborhood movie theaters in the United States. Nickelodeons in competitive markets had a piano or organ, playing whatever music the pianist or organist knew that seemed appropriate to a scene (e.g. classic ragtime for a chase sequence, or what was called at the time "Eliza-crossing-the-ice" music during the scary moments).

Ein nickelodeon (AE: nickel = Fünf-Cent-Münze, griechisch Odeion = überdachtes Theater) war in den USA um 1905 ein bestuhlter Vorführraum, in dem gegen Eintritt von meist einem Nickel die ersten Kinofilme gezeigt wurden.Das erste nickel odeon war die Penny Arcade in Los Angeles, die 1896 von Thomas Tally eröffnet wurde. Das Filmprogramm der Nickelodeons wechselte meistens zwei Mal in der Woche. Es wurden mehrere (damals sehr kurze) Filme verschiedener Genres hinter einander gezeigt - Tragödien, Komödien, Abenteuerfilme und frühe Dokumentarfilme. Eine Vorführung dauerte etwa eine Stunde. Die Filme waren Stummfilme, die von einem Musiker auf dem Klavier oder Akkordeon begleitet wurden.
