Placă de reţea
O placă de reţea, numită şi adapter de reţea sau placă cu interfaţă de reţea, este o piesă electronică proiectată petru a permite calculatoarelor să se conecteze la o reţea de calculatoare. Termenul corespunzător în engleză este Network Interface Card (NIC). Placa este de obicei opţională; când este instalată într-un computer ea permite accesul fizic la resursele reţelei. Reţeaua permite utilizatorilor de a crea conexiuni cu alţi utilizatori, în principiu pe două căi: prin cablu fizic, sau printr-o tehnologie radio fără fir de tip wireless.

NIC1 (neighbourhood information centre)
= centro de información ciudadana.
Ex: The Kahn report saw NICs (neighbourhood information centers) as 'social utilities comparable to the general public utilities (gas, electric, phone) and public services (post office, water supply) which are recognized as vital to the adequate functioning of the individual, the family and the neighborhood in modern society' = El informa Kahn consideraba que los centros de información ciudadana son "empresas de servicio social comparables a las empresas de servicio público generales (el gas, la electricidad, el teléfono) y a los servicios públicos (correos, abastecimiento de agua) que se reconocen que son vitales para el funcionamiento adecuado del indivudo, la familia y la vecindad en la sociedad moderna" .

NIC2 (Networked Information Center)
= NIC (Centro de Información en Red).
Def: En Internet, todo centro que gestiona la información sobre una red; el más famoso es InterNIC donde se recogen todos los nombres de dominio.
