neutralization (Amer.)
n.
act of making neutral; process of neutralizing; making ineffective (also neutralisation)
Neutralization
Neutralization is a
chemical reaction, also called a water forming reaction, in which an
acid and a
base or alkali (soluble base) react and produce a
salt and
water(H2O). In other words, it can be said that neutralization is the combination of
hydrogen ions H+ and
hydroxide ions OH− (or
oxide ions O2−) to form
water molecule H2O. In the process, a
salt is formed. In the process of neutralization a
proton (usually
hydrogen) is transferred. An
acid is a proton donor, while a
base is a proton receiver. H2O can act as either an acid or a base, depending on whether it comes in contact with an acid or a base (it takes the opposite form) Neutralization is generally
exothermic, meaning it produces
heat. One example of an endothermic neutralization is that of baking soda and vinegar (or other weak acids)

neutralization
Noun
1. a chemical reaction in which an acid and a base interact with the formation of a salt; with strong acids and bases the essential reaction is the combination of hydrogen ions with hydroxyl ions to form water
(synonym) neutralisation, neutralization reaction, neutralisation reaction
(hypernym) chemical reaction, reaction
(derivation) neutralize, neutralise
2. action intended to keep a country politically neutral or exclude it from a possible war; "the neutralization of Belgium"
(synonym) neutralisation
(hypernym) nullification, override
(derivation) neutralize
3. (euphemism) the removal of a threat by killing or destroying it (especially in a covert operation or military operation)
(synonym) neutralisation
(hypernym) destruction, devastation
(classification) euphemism
4. action intended to nullify the effects of some previous action
(synonym) neutralisation, counteraction
(hypernym) nullification, override
(derivation) counteract, countervail, neutralize, counterbalance
