Neurotoxicity occurs when the exposure to natural or manmade toxic substances, which are called neurotoxins, alters the normal activity of the nervous system. This can eventually disrupt or even kill neurons, key cells that transmit and process signals in the brain and other parts of the nervous system. Neurotoxicity can result from exposure to substances used in chemotherapy, radiation treatment, drug therapies and organ transplants, as well as exposure to heavy metals such as lead and mercury, certain foods and food additives, pesticides, industrial and/or cleaning solvents, cosmetics, and some naturally occurring substances. Symptoms may appear immediately after exposure or be delayed. They may include limb weakness or numbness, loss of memory, vision, and/or intellect, headache, cognitive and behavioral problems and sexual dysfunction. Individuals with certain disorders may be especially vulnerable to neurotoxins.

Ein Organisches Psychosyndrom (OPS) ist eine psychische Veränderung des Menschen als Folge einer organischen Erkrankung des Gehirns (auch Hirnorganisches Psychosyndrom - HOPS) oder des Körpers allgemein. Als organisch bedingtes ist es abzugrenzen gegen endogene, durch Veranlagung bedingte Psychosen (Schizophrenie und Depression/Manie) sowie gegen exogene, durch äußere Faktoren ausgelöste psychotische Störungen. Als typisch gilt die begleitende Bewußtseinsstörung (Vigilanz oder Orientiertheit), die nicht bei endogenen oder exogenen Ursachen auftritt. Es ist zwischen akutem und chronischem OPS zu unterscheiden.

Organisch psychosyndroom (OPS) is de verzamelnaam voor ziekteverschijnselen (een syndroom) die mensen kunnen oplopen als zij langdurig met organische oplosmiddelen in contact zijn geweest. De stoffen komen via de huid of door inademing in het lichaam terecht. Bekende organische oplosmiddelen zijn: tolueen, xyleen, benzeen, terpentine, hexaan, thinner, peut, wasbenzine, ether en alcohol. Zij worden vanwege hun vluchtigheid en vetoplossend vermogen veel gebruikt in bijvoorbeeld ontvettingsmiddelen, verven, beitsen, lijmen, autolakken en verdunningsmiddelen. In de angelsaksische wereld wordt het syndroom ook wel aangeduid met de termen Organic solvent neurotoxicity of Chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE).
