Neumes are the basic elements of Western and Eastern systems of musical notation prior to the invention of five-line staff notation. The earliest neumes were inflective marks which indicated the general shape but not necessarily the exact notes or rhythms to be sung. Later developments included the use of heightened neumes which showed the relative pitches between neumes, and the creation of a four-line musical staff that identified particular pitches. Neumes do not generally indicate rhythm, but additional symbols were sometimes juxtaposed with neumes to indicate changes in articulation, duration, or tempo. Neumatic notation was later used in medieval music to indicate certain patterns of rhythm called rhythmic modes, and eventually evolved into modern musical notation. Neumatic notation remains standard in modern editions of plainchant.

On appelle neumes (du grec neuma, signe, ou altération du grec pneuma, souffle) les signes de la notation musicale qui furent en usage à partir du et durant tout le Moyen Âge, jusqu'à la généralisation de la portée moderne à cinq lignes. La notation neumatique carrée sur les portées à quatre lignes reste utilisée dans les éditions modernes de plain-chant, c’est-à-dire essentiellement le chant grégorien.

Mit Neumen werden die Striche und Punkte zur Notation des Gregorianischen Chorals bezeichnet, außerdem auch Tonreihen aus einfachen Vokalen (nicht Worten), die am Schluss der Choräle gesungen wurden. Sie entwickelten sich aus den Zeichen Akut und Gravis sowie aus Handbewegungen (griechisch νεύμα: Wink), mit denen den Chorsängern der Melodieverlauf angezeigt oder in Erinnerung gerufen werden konnte.

Neumy - forma notacji muzycznej w średniowieczu. Obejmuje ona znaki w formie kropek (punctum) i kresek (virga) przedstawiające przybliżony przebieg melodii; nie zawsze określają one dokładny czas trwania i wysokość dźwięku. Neumy zapisywano początkowo bezliniowo, później na czterolinii.Tempo jednej neumy określa się w przybliżeniu jako spokojną ósemkę. W różnych krajach oraz na przestrzeni wieków, neumy przyjmowały i pod wzgędem trwania, i wysokości oraz samego zapisu różną postać. W związku z tym nazywane są neumami bizantyńskimi, włoskimi, francuskimi, gotyckimi itd. W stylu rzymskim neuma była rombem.

Een neume (Gr. νευμα: teken, aanwijzing) is een teken ter aanduiding van de melodiegang bij een gezongen lettergreep. Neumen zijn het oudste muziekschrift van Europa. De (West-Europese) neumtekens zijn ontstaan in de 9e eeuw en waren bedoeld als geheugensteun voor de koorleider bij het instuderen en dirigeren van de Gregoriaanse gezangen. Sommige onderzoekers nemen aan dat de oorspronkelijke neumen imitaties waren van de handbewegingen van de cantor/dirigent (chironomie). Ook is wel gesteld dat de neumen hun basis vinden in de prosodische accenttekens (acutus, gravis, circumflexis), in tekens voor de punctuatie in teksten (o.m. comma en colon), of in de zogeheten ekfonetische notatie ter aanduiding van de intonatie van liturgische teksten.
