neocortex

The neocortex (Latin for "new bark" or "new rind") is a part of the brain of mammals. It is the top layer of the cerebral hemispheres, 2-4 mm thick, and made up of six layers, labelled I to VI (with VI being the innermost and I being the outermost). The neocortex is part of the cerebral cortex (along with the archicortex and paleocortex — which are cortical parts of the limbic system). It is involved in higher functions such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, and, in humans: conscious thought, and language. Other names for the neocortex include neopallium ("new mantle") and isocortex ("equal rind").

Unter dem Neocortex wird der stammesgeschichtlich jüngste Teil der Großhirnrinde verstanden. Er wird nur bei Säugetieren gefunden. Beim Menschen bildet er den Großteil der Oberfläche des Großhirns (rund 90 %), darunter die Repräsentationen der Sinneseindrücke (sensorische Areale), den für Bewegungen zuständigen Motorcortex und die weiträumigen Assoziationszentren. Ältere Gebiete wie der Hippocampus werden als Archicortex bezeichnet, das "Riechhirn" gehört zum "Paläokortex".

De neocortex is een deel van de hersenen dat bij zoogdieren voorkomt. Het bestaat uit de bovenste laag (2-4 mm dik) van de twee hersenhelften. De neocortex maakt deel uit van de cortex cerebri en is betrokken bij de hogere functies, zoals zintuigelijke waarneming, bewuste bewegingen en (bij mensen) redeneren, abstract denken en taal. De grijze stof bestaat uit cellichamen van neuronen en gliacellen, de witte stof uit zenuwuitlopers of axonen die met een myelinelaag zijn bedekt.

Neocórtex, "novo córtex" ou o "córtex mais recente" é a denominação que recebem todas as áreas mais evoluidas do córtex. Estas áreas constituem a "capa" neural que recobre os lóbulos pré-frontais e, em especial, os lobos frontais dos mamíferos. Se encontram muito desenvolvidas nos primatas e destaca-se seu desenvolvimento no Homo sapiens sapiens.
