nationalize (Amer.)
v.
make into a citizen, naturalize; make nationwide; place under national government; become a nation (also nationalise)
Nationalization
Nationalization, also spelled nationalisation, is the act by which a
nation takes possession of assets without requiring the owner's consent, with or without payment of compensation. Nationalization without compensation is a case of
expropriation. Nationalization is distinguished from
property redistribution in that the government retains control of nationalized
property. Nationalization usually refers to private assets, but may also mean assets owned by lower levels of government, such as
municipalities. The opposite of nationalization is usually
privatization or de-nationalisation, but may also be
municipalization. A renationalization occurs when state-owned assets are privatized and later nationalized again, often when a different
political party or
faction is in power.
