Nationalism is a term that refers to a doctrine or political movement that holds that a nation—usually defined in terms of ethnicity or culture—has the right to constitute an independent or autonomous political community based on a shared history and common destiny. Most nationalists believe the borders of the state should be congruent with the borders of the nation. Extreme forms of nationalism, such as those propagated by fascist movements in the twentieth century, hold that nationality is the most important aspect of one's identity and attempt to define the nation in terms of race or genetics.

Nationalismus bezeichnet eine politische Ideologie, die auf eine Kongruenz zwischen einer (meist ethnisch definierten) Nation und einem Staatsgebilde abzielt (Ernest Gellner, 1983). In der Umgangssprache und teilweise im neueren Sprachgebrauch wird darunter oft eine Überhöhung der eigenen Nation (siehe Chauvinismus) verstanden. Diese zweite Bedeutung von Nationalismus wird oft vom romantisch-emotionalen Patriotismus abgegrenzt, der sich für die Werte und Symbole seines Landes einsetzt und dies auch anderen Nationalitäten zubilligt, jedoch auch in Nationalismus münden kann.

Nacjonalizm (z łac. natio – naród) - postawa społeczno-polityczna uznająca naród za najwyższe dobro. Nacjonalizm uważa interes własnego narodu za nadrzędny wobec interesu jednostki, grup społecznych, czy społeczności regionalnych. Przyjmuje on, że najwyższym suwerenem państwa jest naród. Nacjonalizm przedkłada interesy własnego narodu nad interesami innych narodów, zarówno wewnątrz kraju (mniejszości narodowe lub etniczne) jak i na zewnątrz (narody sąsiednie). Ideologia ta uznaje państwo narodowe za najwłaściwszą formę organizacji społeczności złączonej wspólnotą pochodzenia, języka, historii i kultury. W literaturze polskiej istnieje wyraźne rozróżnienie między nacjonalizmem a patriotyzmem, który w odróżnieniu od nacjonalizmu częściej postrzegany jest pozytywnie. Za skrajną, agresywną formę nacjonalizmu uważany jest szowinizm.

Si può parlare di nazionalismo per le dottrine ed i movimenti che sostengono l'affermazione, l'esaltazione ed il potenziamento della nazione intesa come collettività omogenea, ritenuta depositaria di valori tradizionali tipici ed esclusivi, del patrimonio culturale e spirituale nazionale, sebbene questa definizione non sia univoca.
