The nation state is a state that self-identifies as deriving its political legitimacy from serving as a sovereign entity for a nation as a sovereign territorial unit. The state is a political and geopolitical entity; the nation is a cultural and/or ethnic entity. The term "nation state" implies that the two geographically coincide. Nation state formation took place at different times in different parts of the earth but has become the dominant form of state organization.

Ein Nationalstaat ist ein Staatsmodell, das auf der Idee und Souveränität der Nation beruht. Sprachliche, kulturelle oder ethnische Homogenität wurde zwar im Diskurs um die Nation oft als Voraussetzung des Nationalstaates bezeichnet, ist aber in der Realität nirgends verwirklicht.

Un État-nation est la juxtaposition d'un État, en tant qu'organisation politique, à une nation, c'est-à-dire des individus qui se considèrent comme liés et appartenant à un même groupe. C'est donc la coïncidence entre une notion d'ordre identitaire, l'appartenance à un groupe, la nation, et une notion d'ordre juridique, l'existence d'une forme de souveraineté et d'institutions politiques et administratives qui l'exercent, l'État. Sans cette coïncidence, on parlera plutôt d'un État multinational.

En nationalstat är en stat som är uppbyggd kring en nation. För dem som förespråkar nationalstater är idealfallet att samtliga nationalstatens medborgare tillhör samma etnicitet. Bonniers lexikon definierar nationalstat som "en geografiskt avgränsad stat vars befolkning i stort sett har samma härstamning, språk och kultur" och hänvisar till begreppet nationalism.

Państwo narodowe - to państwo, którego prawie wszyscy mieszkańcy stanowią jeden naród i zdecydowana większość członków tego narodu zamieszkuje to właśnie państwo. Taka forma państwa wynika m.in. z postulowanego przez ONZ prawa narodów do samostanowienia zawartego w art. 1 Paktu Praw Obywatelskich i Politycznych oraz Paktu Praw Gospodarczych, Społecznych i Kulturalnych.
