It is one of three entities responsible for story-telling of any kind. The others are the author and the reader (or audience). The author and the reader both inhabit the real world. It is the author's function to create the alternate world, people, and events within the story. It is the reader's function to understand and interpret the story. The narrator exists within the world of the story (and only there—although in non-fiction the narrator and the author can share the same persona, since the real world and the world of the story are the same) and presents it in a way the reader can comprehend.

Głos narratora nie musi być identyczny z głosem autora dzieła.Narrator występuje w utworach epickich, może także pojawiać się w epickich formach poetyckich, jak również w dramacie (np. w dramatach Jana Augusta Kisielewskiego - postać narratora, jako jeden z elementów tzw. epizacji dramatu).Istnieje kilka rodzajów narratora:Narrator wszystkowiedzący - opowiada wydarzenia całkowicie z zewnątrz i sprawia wrażenie jakby wszystko o wszystkich wiedział i był w stanie w każdej chwili wniknąć w najtajniejsze obszary psychiki wszystkich bohaterów występujących w dziele. Często się zdarza, że narrator taki jest wpleciony na drugim planie w akcję dzieła.Narrator bezpośredni - jest on zwykle jedną z głównych, lub nawet najważniejszą postacią występującą w dziele i opowiada swoją historię w pierwszej osobie, tak jakby widział ją własnymi oczami.

ナレーター(narrator)とは、テレビの場合、画面にあわせて原稿を読んだり、話を行う人を指し、ラジオの場合は録音が中心ではあるが、音楽などにあわせて原稿を読む人たちを主に指す。ナレーションを本職とするナレーターの他、アナウンサー、声優がナレーション技術の面では専門的なナレーターだと考えられるが、独特の「味」を狙って、声優を本職としない俳優、あるいはそれ以外のタレントがナレーターを務めることも珍しくない。また、ディスクジョッキーがナレーターとして起用される例も多い。
