Nagana, also called nagana pest or Animal African Trypanosomiasis, is a disease of vertebrate animals. The disease is caused by trypanosomes of several species in the genus Trypanosoma. The trypanosomes infect the blood of the vertebrate host, causing fever, weakness, and lethargy which lead to weight loss and anemia; in some animals the disease is fatal unless treated. The trypanosomes are transmitted by tsetse flies.[1]

Nagana ist eine in Afrika auftretende Tierseuche, die die Viehhaltung im afrikanischen "Tsetsegürtel" (14° N bis 29° S) wesentlich einschränkt und durch Trypanosomen verursacht wird. Sie wird durch die Tsetsefliege übertragen.Trypanosoma brucei brucei: Rinder erkranken selten oder gar nicht, dagegen ist sie tödlich für Pferde, Esel, Hunde, Katzen und verschiedene Nagetiere.Trypanosoma vivax ist der Erreger der Nagana bei Rindern und Schafen (Souma).Trypanosoma congolese ist der virulenteste Erreger bei Wiederkäuern (Gambia-Fieber).Trypanosoma simiae ist besonders bei Schweinen fatal, wird manchmal auch als Nagana bezeichnet.

La nagana o n'gana (en zulú, equivalente a "estar deprimido o alicaído") es el nombre que se da a un tipo de tripanosomiasis que afecta a los animales vertebrados. La enfermedad se produce por varias especies y sub-especies del género Trypanosoma y sólo se ha detectado en África. Es el equivalente en los animales a la enfermedad del sueño.
