In physics, the neutron is a subatomic particle with no net electric charge and a mass of 939.573 MeV/c² or 1.008 664 915 (78) u (1.6749 × 10−27 kg, slightly more than a proton). Its spin is ½. Its antiparticle is called the antineutron. The neutron, along with the proton, is a nucleon.

Le neutron est une particule subatomique. C'est une particule fondamentale. Elle se retrouve dans le noyau de l'atome. Comme son nom l'indique, le neutron est neutre et n'a donc pas de charge électrique (ni positive, ni négative). Les neutrons, avec les protons, sont les constituants du noyau de l'atome. Pour un atome, on note Z le nombre de protons (que l'on appelle nombre atomique ou numéro atomique), A le nombre de protons + neutrons. Le nombre de neutrons est donc N=A-Z.

Das Neutron [] (Plural Neutronen []) ist ein elektrisch neutrales Hadron mit dem Formelzeichen n. Es ist Bestandteil der Atomkerne und gehört wie das Proton zu den Nukleonen. Neutron (z łac neuter "obojętny" ) to cząstka subatomowa występująca w jądrach atomowych. Jest obojętny elektrycznie. Posiada spin ½.Według Modelu Standardowego neutron jest cząstką złożoną należącą do klasy hadronów, a dokładniej barionów-nukleonów i składa się z dwóch kwarków dolnych (d) i jednego górnego (u), związanych ze sobą oddziaływaniem silnym za pośrednictwem gluonów.Neutrony będące częścią jąder atomowych są bardzo stabilne. Samodzielne neutrony (tzn. występujące poza jądrem) nie są stabilne, ale rozpadają się bardzo wolno (jak na cząstkę subatomową), jego średni czas życia to 885,7 s (ok. 15 min.). In fisica, il neutrone è una particella subatomica senza carica elettrica e con massa a riposo di 939,57 MeV (leggermente superiore a quella del protone, pari a 938,27 MeV).I nuclei atomici degli elementi (ad eccezione del più comune isotopo dell'idrogeno, che consiste di un singolo protone) sono composti da protoni e neutroni. Al di fuori del nucleo, i neutroni sono instabili ed hanno una emivita di circa 15 minuti. Decadono in un protone, emettendo un elettrone e un antineutrino. Lo stesso tipo di decadimento (decadimento beta) si verifica in alcuni nuclei. Le particelle all'interno del nucleo si trasformano continuamente da protoni a neutroni e viceversa, tramite emissione ed assorbimento di pioni. Il neutrone è classificato come barione, e consiste di due quark down e un quark up.
