The word mythology (from the Greek   mythología, from mythologein to relate myths, from mythos, meaning a narrative, and logos, meaning speech or argument) literally means the (oral) retelling of myths – stories that a particular culture believes to be true and that use the supernatural to interpret natural events and to explain the nature of the universe and humanity. In modern usage, "mythology" is either the body of myths from a particular culture or religion (as in Greek mythology, Egyptian mythology or Norse mythology) or the branch of knowledge dealing with the collection, study and interpretation of myths, also known as mythography.

Die Mythologie ist die systematische Beschäftigung mit Mythen oder deren systematische Darlegung in literarischer, wissenschaftlicher oder religiöser Form. Mythologie kann daher weiter gefasst sein als nur die Gesamtheit der Mythen eines Volkes, einer Region oder einer sozialen Gruppe. Sehr häufig wird der Begriff aber genau so verwendet, als Gesamtheit der Mythen nach der Zugehörigkeit zu einer Kultur bzw. Region (in dieser Bedeutung früher auch Sagenwelt genannt). Daneben kann man auch Mythen zu verschiedenen Themen kulturübergreifend behandeln. Man erhält so Unterteilungen wie z.B. Landschaftsmythologie, Astralmythologie, Zahlenmythologie, Eschatologie.

Mitologia (z gr. mythología = 'opowiadanie legend, starych podań') - zbiór mitów i podań o bogach i bohaterach, funkcjonujący w danej religii lub społeczności. Terminem tym określa się również naukę zajmującą się badaniem mitów. Mitologie mają znaczący wpływ na rozwój kulturowy prawie wszystkich społeczeństw i narodów (wyjątkiem są najprymitywniejsze ludy, jak brazylijscy Pirahã). Na kulturę europejską (literatura, dramat, malarstwo) wpłynęła zwłaszcza mitologia grecka. Nazwy zaczerpnięte z mitologii są często używane do nazywania obiektów astronomicznych.

Mitologia (dal greco mythos e logein; letteralmente: discorrere in maniera razionale del racconto poetico) è il termine con cui si indica lo studio - riferito di frequente alle singole religioni - dei miti. Disciplina considerata fenomeno culturale assai complesso, la mitologia può essere analizzata sotto diverse prospettive; il suo corpus è comunque dato dall'insieme di narrazioni - quasi sempre orali, spesso letterarie - e da drammatizzazioni e rappresentazioni di tipo figurativo che mettono a fuoco le vicende di personaggi esterni al tempo inteso in senso storico.
