The term "mythology" can refer either to the study of myths (e.g., comparative mythology), or to a body or collection of myths (a mythos, e.g., Inca mythology). In folkloristics, a myth is a sacred narrative usually explaining how the world or humankind came to be in its present form, although, in a very broad sense, the word can refer to any traditional story. Myths typically involve supernatural characters and are endorsed by rulers or priests. They may arise as overelaborated accounts of historical events, as allegory for or personification of natural phenomena, or as an explanation of ritual. They are transmitted to convey religious or idealized experience, to establish behavioral models, and to teach.

Ein Mythos (mask., von altgr.  = Laut, Wort, Rede, Erzählung, sagenhafte Geschichte, Mär, lat. mythus, Pl.: Mythen) ist eine erzählerische Verknüpfung von Ereignissen. In der Neuzeit hat der Begriff einen erheblichen Bedeutungswandel erfahren. Er wird in der Gegenwart für eine Erzählung verwendet, die Anspruch auf Geltung erhebt (Ideologie). Je nach Standpunkt ist diese Geltung berechtigt (auf Tradition oder Konsens gestützt) oder unberechtigt (als Gerücht oder Lügengeschichte). – Eine bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gebräuchliche, heute seltene Verdeutschung ist „die Mythe“ als weiblicher Singular.

Un mythe est un récit, porté à l'origine par une tradition orale, qui propose une explication pour certains aspects fondamentaux du monde : sa création (cosmogonie), les phénomènes naturels, le statut de l'être humain, ses rapports avec le divin, la nature ou encore avec les autres humains (d'un autre sexe, d'un autre groupe), etc.

Mitologia (z gr. mythología = 'opowiadanie legend, starych podań') - zbiór mitów i podań o bogach i bohaterach, funkcjonujący w danej religii lub społeczności. Terminem tym określa się również naukę zajmującą się badaniem mitów. Mitologie mają znaczący wpływ na rozwój kulturowy prawie wszystkich społeczeństw i narodów (wyjątkiem są najprymitywniejsze ludy, jak brazylijscy Pirahã). Na kulturę europejską (literatura, dramat, malarstwo) wpłynęła zwłaszcza mitologia grecka. Nazwy zaczerpnięte z mitologii są często używane do nazywania obiektów astronomicznych.
