Als Muta wird ein stummer Laut bezeichnet. Zu den Mutae zählen die Konsonanten d, t, p, b, c und g. Dies hat vor allem in der lateinischen Dichtung Bedeutung, da beim Zusammentreffen von Muta (stummer Laut) und Liquida (fließender Laut) keine Positionslänge vorliegt.

En muta är en gåva, en tjänst eller annan fördel till en tjänsteman eller annan person i maktställning, eller någon som kommer att komma i maktställning, eller i vissa fall någon som har varit i sådan ställning, för att makthavaren ska särbehandla givaren, givarens anhöriga eller någon annan, eller som tack för utförda tjänster. Med makt avses inte enbart myndighetsutövning utan all form av tjänsteutövning. Enbart fysiska personer kan i straffrättslig mening begå ett mutbrott.
