municipalities of Switzerland

Municipalities (sometimes called communities or communes, after the French/Italian names) are the smallest government division in Switzerland, and are called Gemeinden in German, communes in French and comuni in Italian. As of January 2006, Switzerland has 2740 municipalities. While many have a population of a few hundred citizens, the largest cities such as Zürich or Geneva also have the legal status of municipalities. The area of the municipalities varies between 0.28 km² (Ponte Tresa, Ticino) and 282 km² (Bagnes, Valais).

Als unterste Stufe im dreistufigen staatlichen Verwaltungsaufbau der Schweiz (Bund – Kantone – Gemeinde) gelten die mit einem übergeordneten Begriff als Politische Gemeinde bezeichneten Gemeinwesen. In den Kantonen Bern, Luzern, Uri, Obwalden, Zug, Solothurn, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Schaffhausen, Appenzell-Ausserrhoden und Aargau wird sie als Einwohnergemeinde, im Kanton Glarus als Ortsgemeinde bezeichnet. Im Kanton Appenzell Innerrhoden wird die politische Gemeinde als Bezirk bezeichnet.

Os municípios da Suíça somam em 2006 2.740 unidades. Em alemão chamam-se Gemeinden, em francês communes e em italiano comuni.Os municípios mais populosos são Zurique, Genebra, Basiléia, Berna e Lausana com mais de 100.000 habitantes. O mais pequeno município é Corippo com apenas 17 (dezessete) habitantes em 2004.Os grandes municípios são dotados de um parlamento municipal (assembléia) e de um governo comunal cujos nomes variam. Os pequenos municípios têm uma assembléia de todos seus cidadãos eleitores e um governo municipal.

Комму́на (, , ) — административная единица Швейцарии, являющаяся составной частью кантона. По состоянию на 2006 год в Швейцарии насчитывается 2740 коммун.Каждый гражданин Швейцарии является в первую очередь гражданином своей коммуны, затем гражданином кантона, где он проживает и только затем гражданином Швейцарской Конфедерации. Соответствующим образом построена и система налогообложения Швейцарии — каждый гражданин платит 3 разных подоходных налога — один в бюджет Конфедерации, второй в бюджет кантона, а третий — в свою коммуну (соответственно налоги двух граждан, проживающих в соседних домах и имеющих одинаковый доход, могут значительно различатся из-за того факта, что они проживают в разных коммунах).
