Mucus is a slippery secretion of the lining of the mucous membranes in the body. It is a viscous colloid containing antiseptic enzymes (such as lysozyme) and immunoglobulins. Mucus is produced by goblet cells in the mucous membranes that cover the surfaces of the membranes. It is made up of mucins and inorganic salts suspended in water.  Phlegm is a type of mucus that is restricted to the respiratory tract, while the term mucus refers to secretions of the nasal passages as well.

Schleim (lat. Mucus) ist eine zähflüssige organische Absonderung, insbesondere von Schleimhäuten, die üblicherweise dem Schutz der Organoberfläche vor Austrocknung, Fremdpartikeln oder Abrieb dienen. Schleim kann auch der Einhüllung und Abkapselung von unerwünschten Fremdkörpern dienen. Strukturbestimmende Hauptbestandteile des Schleims sind die Muzine.

Slijm (Latijn: Mucus) is een oplossing van macromoleculen in water waardoor dit visceuzer wordt en er in mindere of meerdere mate draden van de oplossing kunnen worden getrokken. Vele soorten macromoleculen, van organische of synthetische aard, komen in aanmerking. Als de concentratie van de verdikkende moleculen groter wordt ontstaat meestal een gel.
