The mucous membranes (or mucosae; singular mucosa) are linings of mostly endodermal origin, covered in epithelium, which are involved in absorption and secretion. They line cavities that are exposed to the external environment and internal organs. They are at several places contiguous with skin: at the nostrils, the mouth, the lips, the eyelids, the ears, the genital area, and the anus. The sticky, thick fluid secreted by the mucous membranes and glands is termed mucus. The term mucous membrane refers to where they are found in the body and not every mucous membrane secretes mucus.

g: Lamina epithelialis mucosae ]] Schleimhaut, Tunica mucosa oder kurz Mukosa (von lateinisch: mucus „Schleim“) bezeichnet die Schutzschicht, die das Innere von Hohlorganen auskleidet. Auch die Bindehaut des Auges und die Deckschicht der Eichel sind Schleimhäute. Im Gegensatz zur normalen Haut besitzt sie keine echte Hornschicht und keine Haare. Wesentlich (und namensgebend) ist die Produktion von Schleimstoffen, den Mucinen.

Les muqueuses (du latin mucus) sont des minces couches de tissus d'origine ectodermique constituées de cellules épithéliales, et de tissu conjonctif sous-jacent qui se nomme chorion qui tapissent les cavités ouvertes vers le milieu extérieur (comme les narines et les oreilles).

Slemhinnor (anatomisk benämning mucosa), är de ytor som täcker många av de hålrum som finns i däggdjur, bland annat i andningsvägarna, mag-tarmsystemet och könsorganen. Slemhinnor består i huvudsak av specialiserade epitelceller vilande på ett basalmembran med lamina propria under, där mukösa körtlar har förmåga att utsöndra slem (mucus). Tarmens slemhinna har förmåga att absorbera näringsämnen, medan andningsvägarna har en slemhinna som kan transportera upp främmande partiklar som andats in till lungan.

Błona śluzowa, śluzówka (gr. mucosa) - wyściółka przewodów i jamistych narządów wewnętrznych mających kontakt ze środowiskiem zewnętrznym organizmu kręgowca. Składa się z dwóch zasadniczych warstw: nabłonka i pokrytej przezeń tkanki łącznej zwanej blaszką właściwą zawierającej naczynia krwionośne i limfatyczne, nerwy, często różne receptory, gruczoły czy mięśnie gładkie.
