Mostro
Un mostro è - in senso molto ampio - un essere vivente a cui sono attribuite una o più caratteristiche straordinarie, per le quali si discosta enormemente rispetto ad altri considerati nella norma, "ordinari". Il termine mostro ha in genere una connotazione negativa.La parola stessa (dal latino monstrum, da monere) significa "portento", "prodigio", e può assumere sfumature ambivalenti.Se inteso in senso positivo, o perlomeno ambiguo, il mostro è accostabile ai mirabilia, ai freak e ai cosiddetti "fenomeni da baraccone"; se inteso invece in senso negativo, si carica - secondo il contesto - di una valenza fisica o morale. "Mostro", dunque, può essere definito sia chi presenta deformità anatomiche sia chi si comporta in un modo disumano; le due caratteristiche possono inoltre coesistere o essere anzi strettamente legate, secondo il modello greco contrapposto al καλός καί ἀγαθός ("bello e buono"). Da tale legame, tra l'altro, deriva il significato dato dalla cronaca nera, che per "mostro" intende un criminale i cui delitti, spesso a sfondo sessuale o inerenti a pratiche che violino radicati tabù come la pedofilia o il cannibalismo, sono particolarmente efferati (il "Mostro di Firenze", il "Mostro di Rostov", il "Mostro di Marcinelle").
