The mosquitos are insects which make up the family Culicidae. They have a pair of scaled wings, a pair of halteres, a slender body, and long legs. The females of most mosquito species suck blood (hematophagy) from other animals, which has made them one of the most deadly disease vectors known to man, killing millions of people over thousands of years and continuing to kill millions per year by the spread of diseases.

Les moustiques sont des Insectes de l'ordre des Diptères et du sous-ordre des Nématocères. Die Stechmücken (Culicidae) oder Moskitos (in Teilen der Schweiz und Süddeutschlands: Schnaken, Staunsen oder Stanzen, im größten Teil Österreichs: Gelsen) bilden eine Familie der Insekten, die der Ordnung der Zweiflügler angehören. Der mittlerweile recht häufig verwendete Name Moskito ist von dem spanischen und portugiesischen Wort Mosquito (wörtlich: kleine Fliege) abgeleitet, das ebenfalls Mücke bedeutet.

Komarowate, komary (Culicidae) – występująca na całym świecie rodzina owadów (nadrodzina Culicoidea) z rzędu muchówek. Znanych jest ponad 40 rodzajów i ok. 3,5 tys. gatunków komarów. Dawniej do komarowatych zaliczano także jako podrodziny: Chaoborinae (obecnie rodzina Chaoboridae) i Dixinae (obecnie rodzina Dixidae).

Con il termine generico zanzare si indicano moltissimi insetti che appartengono all'ordine dei Ditteri, sottordine Nematoceri, famiglia Culicidi (Culicidae). Questa famiglia comprende 35 generi e ben 2700 specie. Resti fossili dimostrano l'esistenza di specie affini a quelle moderne già nell'Oligocene e nell'Eocene.
