A mosque is a place of worship for followers of the Islamic faith. Muslims often refer to the mosque by its Arabic name, masjid Arabic: مسجد — pronounced: // (pl. masajid Arabic: مساجد — pronounced: //). The word "mosque" in English refers to all types of buildings dedicated for Islamic worship, although there is a distinction in Arabic between the smaller, privately owned mosque and the larger, "collective" mosque (masjid jami) (Arabic: جامع), which has more community and social amenities.

Eine Moschee (, masdschid, "Ort der Niederwerfung") ist ein ritueller Ort des gemeinschaftlichen islamischen Gebets und darüber hinaus der politischen, rechtlichen und lebenspraktischen Wertevermittlung im Sinne des Islam sowie ein sozialer Treffpunkt. Sie kann ein Mehrzweckgebäude sein, also auch ein Ort für Unterricht und Gespräche sowie ein Veranstaltungsort für das Feiern gesellschaftlicher Anlässe. In "Das Gebet (As-Salah)" von Sahih Al-Buharyy wird erwähnt, dass die Moschee auch als Übungsplatz für den Kampf verwendet wurde. Die Moschee ist daher nicht mit einer christlichen Kirche vergleichen, die fast nur zum Gottesdienst dient.

Meczet (arab. مسجد masdżid; l.mn. مساجد masadżid) to miejsce kultu muzułmańskiego. Słowo meczet oznacza dowolny budynek, w którym oddaje się cześć Allahowi, niezależnie od jego architektury.Podstawowym celem istnienia meczetów jest umożliwienie muzułmanom wspólnej rytualnej modlitwy (salat). Oczywiście, meczety mogą być wykorzystywane także w innych celach - jako miejsca spotkań, czy ośrodki edukacyjne. Pierwsze meczety, takie jak Meczet Kuba i Masdżid an-Nabawi, powstały w VII wieku i stanowiły po prostu wyznaczone miejsca pod gołym niebem. Dziś, większość meczetów posiada wyrafinowane kopuły i minarety.

La moschea è il luogo di culto per i fedeli dell'Islamismo. La parola italiana deriva direttamente dallo spagnolo "mezquita", a sua volta originata dalla parola araba "masjid" (مسجد) che indica il luogo in cui si compiono le sujūd, le prosternazioni che fanno parte dei movimenti obbligatori che deve compiere il fedele orante. Un tipo di masjid particolare è la masjid jāmiʿ, la moschea "congregazionale" dove si auspica per l'Islam che si radunino collettivamente i fedeli al fine di adempiere all'obbligo della preghiera obbligatoria ( ṣalāt ) del mezzogiorno ( zuhr ) del venerdì.
