In a Western context, the concept of "monotheism" tends to be dominated by the concept of the god of the Abrahamic religions and the Platonic concept of God as put forward by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite.

Der Begriff Monotheismus (von griechisch μόνος monos = einzig und θεός theos = Gott) bezeichnet Religionen bzw. philosophische Lehren, die einen allumfassenden Gott kennen und anerkennen. Damit werden diese in der Religionswissenschaft vom Polytheismus unterschieden, der viele Götter kennt und verehrt. Religionen, die viele Götter kennen, aber einem von diesen den Vorrang (als allein zu verehrenden Gott) einräumen, bezeichnet der Begriff Monolatrie. Der Begriff „Monotheismus“ ist erstmals im 17. Jahrhundert bei dem englischen Theologen und Philosophen Henry More nachgewiesen.

Monoteizm (z monos - "jedyny" + theos - "bóg"; jedynobóstwo) –  wiara w istnienie jedynego Boga i w przeciwieństwie do henoteizmu wykluczający istnienie jakichkolwiek innych istot boskich. Przeciwieństwem monoteizmu jest politeizm. Monoteiści zazwyczaj przypisują Bogu cechy doskonałości takie jak omnipotencja, omniscjencja, omniprezencja i najwyższą dobroć w rozumieniu etycznym.
