monolatrism

Monolatrism or monolatry (Greek: μόνος (monos) = single, and λατρεία (latreia) = worship) is is defined as "the recognition of the existence of many gods, but with the consistent worship of only one deity." In contrast to monotheism, monolatry accepts the existence of other gods; in contrast to polytheism, it regards only one god as worthy of worship. The term was perhaps first used by Julius Wellhausen.

Unter Monolatrie (aus griech.: μόνος monos „einzig“ und λατρεία latreia „kultische Verehrung“) versteht man die Verehrung nur eines einzigen Gottes, ohne dass die Existenz anderer Götter verneint wird. Manchmal wird dafür auch die Bezeichnung Henotheismus gebraucht.

Monolatria (z gr. monos - "jedyny" + latreía - "służba bogu") - oddawanie czci boskiej wyłącznie jednemu bóstwu, bez zwalczania i zaprzeczania istnienia bóstw czczonych przez innych. Jest to pośredni etap rozwoju religii między politeizmem a monoteizmem. Monolatria występowała w kulturach wschodu od starożytności.

Monolatrisme is een type van henotheïsme. Aanhangers geloven dat er vele goden bestaan, maar dat deze goden hun macht slechts kunnen uitoefenen op degenen die hen aanbidden. Zo kan een monolatrist bijvoorbeeld geloven in het bestaan van zowel de Egyptische goden als de god die in de Tenach of in de Bijbel worden beschreven, maar ziet zich als lid van slechts één van deze godsdiensten. De god die de persoon aanbidt beïnvloedt zijn/haar leven; de andere goden niet.
