monocle

A monocle is a type of corrective lens used to correct the vision in only one eye. It consists of a circular lens, generally with a wire ring around the circumference that can be attached to a string. The other end of the string is then connected to the wearer's clothing to avoid losing the monocle. The connoisseur of antiquities Philipp Von Stosch wore a monocle in Rome in the 1720s, in order to closely examine engravings and antique cameos, but the monocle did not become an article of gentlemen's apparel until the nineteenth century, introduced by the dandy's quizzing glass of the 1790s, best remembered in the first cover of The New Yorker, repeated once annually, in February, ever since.

Das Monokel (Kunstwort aus griechisch mono-, „ein“ und lateinisch oculus, „Auge“), auch Einglas genannt, war eine Sehhilfe, die im Gegensatz zur heute verwendeten Brille („Binokel“) aus nur einem Glas bestand und am Auge eingeklemmt wurde.Das Monokel entwickelte sich aus dem Lesestein, einer geschliffenen Linse aus Quarz, Bergkristall oder Beryll, daher das deutsche Wort "Brille". Dieser wurde zum Vergrößern direkt auf das Schriftstück gelegt. Ab dem 14. Jahrhundert wurde die Linse vors Auge gehalten. Im 16. Jahrhundert entstand die Idee, die Linse durch die Muskeln direkt vor dem Auge festzuklemmen, um beide Hände frei zu haben.

Monokl - przyrząd optyczny służący do korekty wad wzroku lub uzyskania określonego wyglądu, rodzaj ozdoby. Jest to rodzaj okularów na jedno oko, utrzymywanych na miejscu i we właściwej pozycji dzięki ciasnemu osadzeniu w okolicy oczodołów, tak, że górna krawędź monokla oparta jest o łuk brwiowy od jego wewnętrznej strony, zaś dolna podtrzymywana jest przez fałdek skóry oczodołu. Monokl często bywał przymocowany na łańcuszku do kieszeni kamizelki fraka, tzw. wizytki.

Een monocle of oogglas is een halve bril, dat wil zeggen, een bril bestaande uit één glas en bedoeld voor één oog.Een monocle functioneert op dezelfde wijze als een bril, met het verschil dat ze niet op de neus wordt geplaatst en ook niet achter het oor wordt gehaakt. In feite bestaat een monocle uit een rond glas, dat afgestemd is op de noden van de slechtziende en waarrond een ring zit. Aan die ring is een touwtje bevestigd, dat men ofwel rond de nek kan hangen, ofwel ergens anders aan de kledij kan vasthaken, zodat de monocle in geval van loskomen niet op de grond terechtkomt. Men klemt de monocle tussen het jukbeen en de wenkbrauw.
