model organism

A model organism is a species that is extensively studied to understand particular biological phenomena, with the expectation that discoveries made in the organism model will provide insight into the workings of other organisms. In particular, model organisms are widely used to explore potential causes and treatments for human disease when human experimentation would be unfeasible or unethical. This strategy is made possible by the common descent of all living organisms, and the conservation of metabolic and developmental pathways and genetic material over the course of evolution.

Un organisme modèle est une espèce qui est étudiée de manière approfondie pour comprendre un phénomène biologique particulier, en supposant que les résultats de ces expériences seront partiellement valables pour la connaissance d'autres organismes ( souvent les humains) . Cela est possible parce que les principes biologiques fondamentaux comme les voies métaboliques, régulatoires, et développementales, et les gènes qui déterminent ces processus, sont proches de ceux observés dans des cellules humaines, qui sont souvent plus difficiles à manipuler. Cette conservation des fonctions et des gènes apparentés est offerte par l'évolution biologique.

Modellorganismen sind ausgewählte Bakterien, Pilze, Pflanzen oder Tiere, die mit einfachen Methoden gezüchtet und untersucht werden können und deshalb von großer Bedeutung für die biologische und biomedizinische Forschung sind. Sie zeichnen sich in der Regel durch eine kurze Generationsdauer sowie eine kostengünstige und unkomplizierte Haltung aus und sind in vielfältiger Hinsicht sehr gut dokumentiert. Darüber hinaus gehörten sie zu den ersten Organismen, deren komplettes Genom entschlüsselt wurde. Von praktisch allen Modellorganismen existieren Linien beziehungsweise Stämme, die speziell für die Verwendung in der Forschung gezüchtet werden. Die Methoden zu ihrer Untersuchung sind in der Regel gut etabliert und dokumentiert.

Un organismo modello è una  specie estensivamente studiata per comprendere particolari fenomeni  biologici, in base al presupposto che le acquisizioni fatte sull'organismo modello possano fornire indicazioni sugli altri organismi. Ciò è possibile grazie al fatto che i principi biologici fondamentali, come le vie  metaboliche, di regolazione e di sviluppo, e i  geni che le codificano, si mantengono attraverso l'evoluzione.
