*mitra (Proto-Indo-Iranian, nominative *mitras) was an important Indo-Iranian divinity. Following the prehistoric cultural split of Indian and Iranian cultures, names descended from *mitra were used for the following religious entities:Mitra (Sanskrit ), a deity (asura) who appears frequently in the ancient Indian text of the Rigveda.Mithra (Avestan Miθra-, Miθrō), a yazata mentioned in the Zoroastrian sacred scripture of the Avesta, whose modern Persian equivalent is Mehr.Mithras, the principal figure of the Greco-Roman religion of Mithraism.

Mitra est un des trois dieux principaux de la littérature Védique avec Varuna et Indra. Il a progressivement disparu avec l'hindouisme au profit de la Trimurti, Brahma, Vishnou et Shiva.

Die Mitra (aus dem griechischen für „Stirnbinde“) ist die traditionelle Kopfbedeckung der Bischöfe  vieler christlicher Kirchen. Auch andere kirchliche Würdenträger mit eigenem Jurisdiktionsbereich (z.B. bestimmte Äbte) tragen Mitren. Die Mitra wird nur bei Pontifikalhandlungen getragen.

Mitra (in persiano: مهرپرستی) è una importante divinità dell'Induismo e della religione persiana; compare nei Veda come uno degli Aditya, una delle divinità solari e dio dell’onestà, dell’amicizia e dei contratti. Nella civiltà persiana, dove il suo nome veniva reso come Mithra, assunse col tempo sempre maggiore importanza fino a diventare la maggiore divinità dello Zoroastrismo. Egli può essere identificato con una divinità proto-Indo-iranica il cui nome può essere ricostruito come Mitra.
